(17-09-23) MOGADISHU — Dr Mohamed Sheikh Ahmed Ali, Minister of Internal Security of the Federal Government of Somalia, landed in Jeddah on Sunday, leading a delegation that also includes Brigadier General Sulub Ahmed Firin, the commander of the Somali Police Force. Responding to an official invitation from their Saudi Arabian counterparts, the delegation’s agenda covers a range of key issues, including accelerating infrastructure projects and bolstering the capabilities of the Somali Police Force.
This official visit occurs a month after President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia welcomed a Saudi delegation in Mogadishu, led by a Special Envoy from the Royal Court of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Analysts interpret these meetings as a fortification of the longstanding ties between Somalia and Saudi Arabia. The talks in Jeddah are expected to yield agreements that could pave the way for strategic collaborations, particularly aimed at modernising Somalia’s police force and fast-tracking various development initiatives.
Somalia grapples with challenges such as threats from extremist group Al-Shabaab and prevailing economic instability. These potential agreements are anticipated to have far-reaching implications, likely influencing not only the security and development within Somalia but also impacting the broader, volatile Horn of Africa region.
