(11-09-23) MOGADISHU – A fresh wave of Somali scholars will head to the UK this month, courtesy of the Chevening Scholarship. While the opportunity is hailed as a step forward for education in Somalia, a lack of local IELTS testing centres poses huge challenges for applicants.
The UK Embassy in Mogadishu announced on Sunday the news via Twitter, stating that the selected individuals will be pursuing Master’s degrees at various UK-based institutions. Funded by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, the Chevening Scholarship has been a diplomatic and educational bridge between the UK and Somalia. The programme covers tuition, living allowances, and flights.
However, a major hurdle remains in the absence of IELTS testing facilities in Somalia. As a result, students must travel to neighbouring countries like Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda to take the English proficiency test, often facing financial and visa complications.
Local education advocates are urging the UK and IELTS authorities to establish testing centres in Somalia, simplifying the application process and expanding access to global education opportunities.
