(24-0923) MOGADISHU— Three individuals, Hawo Osman Abdi, Awil Adan Jama, and Hassan Ali Hassan were sentenced to prison terms by a Somali military court on Sunday for aiding the Al-Shabaab militant group. Abdi admitted to stockpiling arms and becoming radicalised via social media after returning from Saudi Arabia in 2021. Jama, a motorcycle operator, provided intelligence on security force movements, while Hassan was convicted for transporting Al-Shabaab affiliates.
The court’s decision marks a heightened phase in the Somali government’s fight against insurgencies. Jama received a 10-year sentence in a military prison, Abdi was given an eight-year term, and Hassan received a one-year sentence in police custody. A fourth individual, Mohamud Abdi Hussein, was acquitted and released.
The convictions are part of Somalia’s broader strategy to combat terrorism, emphasising stringent legal action against those affiliated with Al-Shabaab.
