(14-09-23) MOGADISHU — British Ambassador to Somalia, Mike Nithavrianakis, met on Thursday in Baidoa with South West State President Abdizais Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen to discuss a range of pressing issues including regional security, combating the terrorist group Al-Shabaab, and addressing drought conditions.
Britain’s military involvement in Somalia, under the banner of Operation TANGHAM, has been critical in training the Somali National Army. Baidoa Security Training Centre (BSTC), operational since 2019, has trained over 700 soldiers in Baidoa. The centre remains a significant asset in strengthening security measures.
Both leaders also conversed about the drought affecting the South West State. Immediate relief actions and long-term strategies for resilience were high on the agenda. Nithavrianakis reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to bolstering the South West State and wider Somali government initiatives aimed at stabilisation and development.
