(17-10-23) MOGADISHU — Governor Mohamed Ibrahim Barre announced on Tuesday that the Lower Shabelle region in South West State is preparing for a second-phase offensive against the extremist group Al-Shabaab. The forthcoming operations are set to prominently feature Mawisley, a local armed force with a proven track record against the militants.
Governor Barre stated that federal troops would be collaborating closely with Mawisley forces, utilising their intimate knowledge of Al-Shabaab activities in the region. “This represents an opportunity for our federal forces to work in tandem with armed locals who have already closely monitored Al-Shabaab’s actions,” said Barre.
The Governor underscored the heavy losses Al-Shabaab has faced in recent clashes with government forces. He explained that the militants often seek refuge in parts of Lower Shabelle when confronted with military pressure in other regions. “Our forces have countered these manoeuvres with a series of targeted bombing raids and ground attacks,” added Barre.
Mawisley, originally established in the Hiiraan region, has since expanded its operational scope across Central Somalia. The group has fought alongside the Somali National Army, which is presently engaged in the first phase of its anti-Al-Shabaab offensive in both the Hirshabelle and Galmudug states.
Governor Barre confirmed that plans to reclaim areas still under Al-Shabaab control are already in place. “We are ready to move forward to capture these areas,” he affirmed.
The announcement sets a crucial precedent for the joint involvement of federal and local forces in the ongoing efforts to eradicate Al-Shabaab’s influence, offering renewed hope for lasting stability in Somalia.
