(29-10-23) MOGADISHU — A mine exploded prematurely near the village of Caad in southern Mudug on Sunday, disrupting an area already unsettled by the extremist group Al-Shabaab, according to reliable sources. Initially aimed at Somali government forces and local residents, the mine detonated early, causing an unspecified number of casualties among the militants.
Somali government officials have confirmed the incident and announced that a thorough investigation is underway.
The Mudug region has recently been a focal point for offensives against Al-Shabaab by Somali government forces. The government reports that thanks to cooperative efforts between the military and local forces, the extremist group has been pushed out of 80 towns and villages in South and Central Somalia.
Tensions continue to run high, notably in the states of Galmudug and Hirshabelle, where confrontations between militants and government forces persist.
Sunday’s event is the latest in an ongoing campaign by the Somali government and local forces to counteract Al-Shabaab and prevent the group from laying mines. The premature detonation of this mine highlights vulnerabilities within Al-Shabaab’s operational strategies.
