(23-10-23) MOGADISHU — The Somali national army and Southwest state forces, conducted an operation on Monday in the Bakool region, reclaiming the village of Eel-Boon from Al-Shabaab militants. The operation centred around the Wajid district in the region, approximately 48 km to the east of the newly liberated Eel-Boon area.
Commander Somali National Army in Bakool. Onkod Moallim Adan spoke to state media outlets about the operation. “The 260th unit of the Somali National Army has taken control of the Eel-Boon village from Al-Shabaab, which is about 48 km west of the Wajid district of the Bakool region,” he said.
Commander Onkod also noted that Al-Shabaab militants had abandoned weapons and vehicles as they fled Eel-Boon. “During the Eel-Boon liberation operation, Al-Shabaab were stripped of the weapons and vehicles they were using to harass the people and they fled the area,” he added.
Bakool, along with the adjacent Bay region, remains a stronghold for Al-Shabaab militants. The latest operation is part of a broader strategy to eliminate Al-Shabaab from these key areas.
