(14/11/23) MOGADISHU – The Hirshabelle Federal State Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Mohamed Bashir Qasim Daqarre, on Tuesday, made an impassioned appeal for international aid in response to the catastrophic floods caused by the overflowing Shabelle River. This urgent call for assistance follows his recent inspection of Baladweyne and Mahadday, towns that have borne the brunt of this natural disaster.
Minister Daqarre described the scene as one of widespread devastation, with substantial displacement of residents and extensive damage to homes and infrastructure. “The mix of floodwaters with sewage has created a critical health crisis,” he stated, emphasizing the urgent need for humanitarian intervention.
In his address, the deputy minister implored charity organisations to act swiftly in delivering aid to the flood-affected areas. He stressed that the plight of Baladweyne and Mahadday is emblematic of the broader challenges faced by the Hirshabelle region in managing the recurrent natural calamities.
The recent El Nino-related floods have claimed over 31 lives and caused significant destruction across vast swathes of land, disrupting lives and livelihoods. “The scale of this disaster requires a coordinated international response,” Minister Daqarre added, highlighting the need for immediate support to rebuild and recover.
