(30-11-23) MOGADISHU (HN) — Ali Jeyte Osman, the Chief Liaison for the Civilian Defense Forces in the Office of the President and former Governor of Hiraan region, visited southern Hiran on Thursday. Jeyte’s visit comes amidst growing concerns over the resurgence of Al-Shabaab in previously liberated areas.
During his address, Jeyte signalled a shift in strategy, announcing a comprehensive air and land military campaign targeting regions under Al-Shabaab’s influence. He starkly warned of the indiscriminate nature of the operations, acknowledging that civilian areas harbouring insurgents would not be spared. “Those who live inside are being bombarded, I do not hide that,” Jeyte stated, underscoring the government’s resolve to counter Al-Shabaab’s activities.
This marks Jeyte’s second warning to civilians residing in Al-Shabaab-controlled zones, urging them to evacuate to avoid becoming unintended victims in the conflict. Jeyte also addressed the recent closure of the road between Beledweyne and Buuloburde by Al-Shabaab, questioning the group’s motives and the prolonged inconvenience caused to residents.
Concluding his address, Jeyte reaffirmed the government’s commitment to launching a serious operation in the areas he visited, to ensure a lasting liberation from Al-Shabaab’s control.
