(04/11/23) MOGADISHU — Saturday’s clash at the Jowhar airport has left several casualties, stemming from a severe confrontation between the elite Danab commandos and the presidential guard of Hirshabelle.
The airport, which serves as the region’s main air hub, became a battleground as Speaker Abdihakin Luqman of the Hirshabelle Parliament was being escorted for his scheduled departure. Reports indicate that the exchange of fire intensified rapidly, leading to a dire situation.
In a strongly worded press release, the Jowhar governor denounced the Danab forces for initiating the violent outbreak, depicting the scene as a sudden and aggressive attack on his convoy and their security detail, and confirming the use of substantial firepower.
Casualties, including injured parliamentary members, have been verified by local officials. Speaker Luqman has made an immediate appeal for intervention from the Federal Government of Somalia, emphasising the need for a swift and clear response to the violence.
The Ministry of Defence released a statement conveying deep sorrow over the events at Jowhar airport. “Full empathy is with those affected as the Somali National Army (SNA) and the Armed Forces Court conduct a thorough investigation. Assurances have been given that justice will be administered promptly for any proven wrongdoing. The Army’s honour in safeguarding the nation’s security remains unshaken.”
Tensions are palpable in the city of Jowhar, with residents apprehensive about the potential repercussions of the conflict. This recent turmoil follows on the heels of another fatal incident involving Danab forces just a day prior.
As the situation unfolds, the anticipated response from the federal government will be crucial in addressing the unrest and charting a path towards stability.
