(21-11-23) KISMAYO —  The President of Jubaland, Ahmed Mohamed Islam Madobe, in response to the catastrophic floods caused by unprecedented El-Nino rains, conducted inspections of the hardest-hit areas in the Lower Juba Region on Tuesday. Accompanied by senior United Nations officials, local authorities, and community leaders, the President’s visit highlights the urgent need for intensified relief operations in the region.

he relentless downpour has unleashed devastating floods along the Juba River, decimating homes and infrastructure. With entire towns and villages in Gedo, Middle Juba, and Lower Juba submerged, the crisis has led to significant loss of life and widespread destruction.

During his tour, President Islam witnessed firsthand the severe challenges faced by the hundreds of thousands of families displaced by the floods. The calamity has left countless homeless, with vital infrastructure like bridges in ruins. In some cities, the destruction is near-total.

The President praised the efforts of the flood relief committee for their swift action in delivering aid to the most affected areas. He also commended the Ministry of Health personnel for providing indispensable medical services to the displaced people, predominantly from the Central Juba region.

In a subsequent meeting with leaders of various aid organisations operating within Jubaland, President Madobe discussed strategies to expedite the delivery of necessary relief to those impacted by the floods. The meeting underscored the urgent need for coordinated action to address the escalating humanitarian crisis in Jubaland.
