(03/11/23) MOGADISHU — Security forces in Mogadishu successfully averted a potential tragedy on Friday evening when they intercepted a suicide bomber in the Howlwadaag district, close to the Sayidka junction at Baar-Bulsho restaurant.
The assailant, who was under close surveillance due to his suspicious behaviour, detonated his vest and was killed in the blast, police sources informed Halqabsi News. The attack resulted in no other deaths, but one officer involved in the operation sustained minor injuries.
The incident occurred during an attempt by security forces to apprehend the individual, who realised escape was unfeasible. According to the reports from eyewitness who spoke to Halqabsi News, the situation was tense, with the man acting strangely outside the restaurant before he was approached by the authorities.
The state media, SNTV, quoted an official statement praising the security forces for their keen perception of the threat posed by what they referred to as a “Khawarij” (Al-Shabaab plot, an archaic term denoting a group seen as outside the moral consensus of the community.
Photographs released by official channels have confirmed the bomber’s death, with graphic evidence of the attack aftermath, including images of the bomber’s remains.
This incident stands as a stark reminder of the constant vigilance required by the security personnel in Mogadishu. It also highlights the ongoing threat of extremist violence in the region, and the critical importance of prompt and decisive action by law enforcement to protect citizens.
The police officer who was wounded is reported to be receiving appropriate care and is expected to make a full recovery.
