(11/11/23) MOGADISHU — Banadir Regional Court in Somalia on Saturday issued an arrest warrant for Abdulkadir Mohamud Ibrahim, the former manager of the Eastern Tax Office of the Ministry of Finance. The court’s directive, announced today, marks the latest effort in the Somali federal government’s intensified campaign to root out corruption.
Ibrahim, who is currently absent, is accused of corruption, misappropriation of public funds, and falsification of documents, with these offences allegedly occurring at the Eastern Tax Office in the Warta Nabadda district. The High Court, acting on a case presented by the national prosecution, has given Ibrahim a 30-day period, starting from 11 November 2023 to 10 December 2023, to appear before the court. Failure to comply will result in legal action as per the country’s law.
This move comes as part of a broader crackdown on corruption in Somalia, which has seen the arrest and trial of numerous government officials. Still at large are several key figures, including Muhiyedin Sabay, former director of the Eastern Tax Department; Abdul Qadir Ilmi Ali, former director of the Immigration Agency; and Mohamed Adan Jimale, all facing similar accusations.
The Somali federal government’s campaign against corruption is gaining momentum, signalling a commitment to enhancing transparency and accountability in public office. This latest development is a clear indication of the government’s determination to tackle corruption head-on and restore public trust in its institutions.
