(30-11-23) DUBAI (HN) — President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia arrived in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on Thursday, embarking on a significant journey as part of his 52nd international trip since taking office in May 2022. This landmark visit underscores the urgency of Somalia’s environmental and security challenges on the global stage, as the president leads a delegation to participate in the International Conference on Climate Change (COP28).
President Mohamud’s agenda at the conference is twofold. His primary aim is to highlight the drastic effects of climate change in Somalia. The catastrophic floods and landslides, triggered by the El Niño phenomenon, have not only resulted in significant loss of life but have also led to the displacement of communities and severe disruptions in agricultural livelihoods.
“The environmental crises we face are not just national but global challenges,” President Mohamud stated. “International support is crucial in bolstering our efforts to manage these catastrophes and safeguard our people’s futures.”
His presence at COP28 is a critical opportunity to garner support and cooperation from global leaders and environmental experts. President Mohamud’s schedule includes pivotal meetings with various heads of state, focusing on securing emergency aid for the Somali people affected by the ongoing floods.
In the broader context, the Horn of Africa has been grappling with escalating climate challenges, making Somalia’s plight a pertinent issue at this global forum. President Mohamud’s advocacy at the summit is a call to action for international collaboration in addressing these regional environmental crises.
Following his engagements in the UAE, President Mohamud will continue to the United States for another conference, furthering his international diplomatic efforts. There, he plans to address the critical issue of lifting the arms embargo against Somalia, a key component in the nation’s strategy against the militant group Al-Shabaab.
