(21-11-23) MOGADISHU — Somali government forces on Tuesday conducted extensive operations against Al-Shabaab militants in the Middle Shabelle region, particularly in its eastern areas. These strategic operations were a collaborative effort between the Somali National Army, Local Defense Forces, and supportive local residents, focusing on the regions stretching between Daru Nicma and El Bad.
The military forces have successfully penetrated the dense forests of the Darunimca area, a known Al-Shabaab stronghold. This operation marks a critical step in disrupting the militant group’s recent activities in the region.
Commencing their mission from the Al-Kowthar village, the armed forces are determined to dislodge Al-Shabaab from the key borders of Middle Shabelle and the adjacent Galgaduud region. High-ranking officials from the Somali military have expressed their commitment to continue this offensive, aiming to secure the region and reopen the vital border connecting Middle Shabelle and Galgaduud.
Currently, the situation remains highly volatile with reports of ongoing military engagements in various parts of the Hir Shabelle region. Middle Shabelle, once a stronghold for Al-Shabaab, has seen a significant reduction in the group’s presence due to earlier phases of military operations.
This renewed military focus comes after a brief hiatus in the government-led operations against Al-Shabaab. The Somali government is intensifying its efforts to combat the militant group, seeking to establish stability and security across the nation.
