(03/11/23) MOGADISHU — Somali MP Dahir Amin Jesoow an interview on Friday with Somali Cable TV, has spoken candidly about the setbacks faced by the Somali government forces in the ongoing offensive against the insurgent group Al-Shabaab. He admitted to a slow-down in operations following a concerted attack by the group on a military installation in the Owsweyne village in August.
Jesoow consistently reassures President Hassan Sheikh of the government’s impending triumph over Al-Shabaab, emphasising the President’s determination to vanquish the militant faction.
Confronted with the question of whether there is political dissent or opposition to the current administration’s strategy against Al-Shabaab, Jesoow was quick to refute such conjecture. He underscored a sense of solidarity among Somali politicians and citizens alike in the quest to subdue the extremist group.
Emphasising the universal political ambition to preside over a country free from the grip of Al-Shabaab, Jesoow underscored the futility of attempting to govern amidst the group’s tumult. He delineated the military progress against Al-Shabaab as a continuous effort, initiated under the previous leadership of Farmajo and built upon by the current government.
Addressing broader political reforms, Jesoow shed light on the leadership styles of past presidents and the imperative of constitutional reform and election modalities. He recalled the initiatives of former leaders Sharif Sheikh, Mohamed Farmajo, and Hassan Kheyre towards instituting a ‘one person, one vote’ system, aligning them with President Hassan Sheikh’s current electoral reform ambitions.
MP Jesoow’s statements arrive as Somalia treads a path fraught with the challenges of governance, security maintenance, and electoral reform, all while engaged in a relentless battle against insurgency.
