(14/11/23) MOGADISHU – The Ministry of Health of the Federal Government of Somalia hosted a commemorative ceremony for International Diabetes Day on Tuesday. The event saw the participation of key ministry officials, including Dr Mohamed Hassan Bullaale, the Deputy Minister of Health and Social Care. The event was also attended by members of parliament, medical professionals, representatives from both international and local organisations, and heads of various public and private hospitals.
In alignment with the day’s significance, free diabetes screenings were a central feature of the event. These efforts are part of a broader initiative led by the Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) department of the Ministry. The department is dedicated to continuing diabetes awareness campaigns throughout the month, emphasising the importance of early detection and management of this condition.
This year’s World Diabetes Day is centred around the theme ‘Access to Diabetes Care.’ In response, the Ministry of Health and Social Care is enhancing its efforts to raise awareness among the Somali people, with the goal of mitigating the risks associated with insufficient knowledge and a delayed response to diabetes.
