(06-12-23) MOGADISHU (HN) — On Tuesday night airstrikes were launched against Al-Shabaab in Somalia’s Middle Jubba region, targeting foreign fighters within the militant group. The towns of Bu’ale and Saakow, under Al-Shabaab control, were the primary focus of these attacks.

According to SNA officials, the strikes were directed at foreign officers allied with Al-Shabaab, following detailed intelligence reports about their whereabouts. This indicates a strategic approach in the military operation, underpinned by high-level intelligence gathering and operational planning.

Besides targeting key personnel, the airstrikes also aimed at destroying several Al-Shabaab facilities, including locations where explosives were stored. The full extent of the damage and casualties caused by these strikes remains uncertain. The militant group’s control over information in their territories and the intimidation of local populations continue to hinder accurate reporting.

The situation in the region is currently tense, with no statements yet from the Somali federal government or the international allies involved in these air operations. This operation follows a drone strike on a house in the Jilib district on Sunday, believed to be a gathering spot for Al-Shabaab leaders. These latest airstrikes signal an intensification of efforts by Somali forces, supported by international partners, to dismantle Al-Shabaab’s presence in Somalia.
