(07-12-23) MOGADISHU (HN) — Al-Shabaab militants have abandoned their military bases in the southern part of central Somalia’s Mudug region, according to credible sources. This development follows intensified military operations by Somali government forces and local armed groups in the area, which have reportedly instilled fear within the ranks of Al-Shabaab.
The group’s departure from the Dumaye and Dabagale areas, previously known as strategic bases for planning and launching attacks against government and local forces, marks a significant shift in the ongoing conflict. The Somali government, in response, has increased its military presence in the region, joining forces with the Galmudug dervishes and local militias already stationed there.
In a related operation, government and local forces managed a notable rescue, liberating six individuals held captive by Al-Shabaab in the Bajela area, where ransom demands had been made for their release.
The situation in the Mudug region remains tense, with the atmosphere indicating a looming large-scale conflict against Al-Shabaab. The group had a long-standing presence in various southern parts of the Mudug region, including Aad, Dabagalo, Dumaye, Miroon, and Jowle. However, recent movements suggest that they have now consolidated their forces in the Caad and Shabeelow villages.
Preparations are underway for potential clashes in these areas, with government forces, Galmudug Dervishes, and armed locals positioned in Bacadweyn, Amara, and the mountainous regions near Shabeelow, ready to confront Al-Shabaab.
