(23-01-24) DOHA (Halqabsi News) — President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with the Emir of Qatar, Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, in Doha on Tuesday to discuss bolstering bilateral ties and address regional concerns in the Horn of Africa.
President Mohamud thanked Qatar for its unwavering support for Somalia’s unity and independence, particularly highlighting Qatar’s firm stance against Ethiopian intervention in Somali affairs. The meeting is part of President Mohamud’s broader diplomatic campaign to protect Somalia’s sovereignty and strengthen regional security.
The Emir of Qatar reiterated his commitment to supporting the Somali government and expressed concern about the potential instability in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region. The discussions emphasised the critical importance of maintaining regional stability and harmony among the nations and peoples of this strategically vital area.
This high-level dialogue comes in the wake of Somalia’s diplomatic efforts following Ethiopia’s contentious agreement with the Somaliland administration, which was later nullified by the Somali federal parliament and branded illegal. The agreement, granting Ethiopia access to the Red Sea, sparked regional and international attention.
President Mohamud’s diplomatic initiatives have yielded substantial international backing, with support from key global and regional bodies, including the United Nations, African Union, IGAD, and the Arab League, as well as countries like the US, UK, UAE, Qatar, Sudan, and Egypt. Egypt’s strong assertion, equating an attack on Somalia to an attack on itself, highlights the regional solidarity with Somalia and the seriousness of the matter.
