(06-01-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — Today in southern Mudug, a fierce battle erupted between Somali army forces and Al-Shabaab militants, as reported by various sources in the Somali regional government of Galmudug. The conflict occurred in the area of Jeexa-Jeexa, a known Al-Shabaab stronghold. The battle has reportedly inflicted substantial losses on both sides, with the situation remaining highly volatile.
Among the fallen is the commander of the Gorgor forces’ 18th battalion, Major Abdi Mohamed Sul-nuug, who played a crucial role in the battle against Al-Shabaab. Sul-nuug, initially wounded in action, later succumbed to gunshot injuries. He was a key figure in previous campaigns, notably in liberating the Aden Yabal district and other central regions from Al-Shabaab control.
The battle commenced early this morning with ground assaults, escalating to aerial bombings that continued until noon. Despite the intensity of the conflict, Somali military officials have announced significant gains, asserting that they have overrun Al-Shabaab’s defences in the Jeexa-Jeexa area. However, the conflict is ongoing.
Recent days have seen intensified military operations in Mudug, involving Somali national forces, Galmudug state troops, and residents. These operations are part of a broader strategy to challenge Al-Shabaab’s stronghold in the region and restore stability.
