Somalia Raises Alarm Over Ethiopian ‘Invasion’ Threat at NAM Summit

(19-01-24) KAMPALA (Halqabsi News) — In a fervent address at the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud warned of a looming threat from Ethiopia, alleging plans for an “impending invasion” into Somali territory. This dramatic claim has escalated tensions between the neighbouring Horn of Africa nations, sparking international concern.

President Mohamud, in a charged speech, accused Ethiopia of flouting international law and violating Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He described Ethiopian officials’ rhetoric as “reckless and irresponsible,” and called upon the international community, including the NAM, the African Union, and the United Nations, for intervention.

Ethiopia, under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali, has been involved in a contentious Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the self-declared independent region of Somaliland, drawing sharp criticism from Somalia. Prime Minister Abiy, while addressing the NAM Summit, defended the MoU as a strategic necessity for Ethiopia, a landlocked country seeking innovative solutions for development and the sustenance of its people.

The Ethiopian leader emphasised the challenges faced by landlocked nations, framing the MoU with Somaliland as essential for Ethiopia’s access to the sea and economic advancement.

The international community, particularly members of the Non-Aligned Movement, the African Union, and the United Nations, now face the challenge of navigating this complex and potentially volatile situation. As tensions rise, the potential for diplomatic engagement and resolutions by global organisations remains a critical focus.
