(29-02-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — Jubaland security forces repelled an attack by Al-Shabaab militants on a military camp in the El Wak district of the Gedo region, officials reported on Thursday. The assault targeted the Dervish army camp, recently visited by Jubbaland’s Minister of Security, Yusuf Hussein Osman Dhumal.
According to local authorities, the attack prompted a fierce confrontation between the Somali military and the insurgents. “Our forces have prevented the attack by Al-Shabaab and have stabilised the situation in El Wak,” declared a spokesperson for the Jubaland administration.
The exact casualties and damages from the skirmish remain unclear as the region recovers and counter-operations persist. Al-Shabaab has yet to state their failed attempt to overrun the military installation, which is instrumental in preparing troops for Jubaland’s defence efforts.
The district has been on edge due to increasing threats from Al-Shabaab, aiming to capitalise on the impending withdrawal of Kenyan forces from the area. Minister Dhumal voiced concerns about the militant group’s ambitions: “Al-Shabaab is openly declaring their intention to capture El Wak following the Kenyan forces’ departure. We cannot allow them to achieve their goals.”
Gedo and two Jubba regions, considered Al-Shabaab strongholds, frequently face assaults on Somali and African Union force positions.
