(06-02-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — A mortar attack on Bakara market in the heart of Mogadishu resulted in the death of more than 10 individuals and injuries to over 20, officials confirmed on Tuesday. The assault targeted the busy areas around the Abu Huraira Mosque, Salaam Bank, and a nearby restaurant, causing widespread panic and significant damage.
Emergency services were promptly dispatched to the scene, where the injured were taken to various hospitals across the capital for treatment. The attack momentarily disrupted the day-to-day activities of the market, highlighting the severity of the incident.
In a statement to the media, Banadir Regional Security Commissioner Yabooh clarified the nature of the incident: “Investigation is ongoing. We are in Bakaro, examining 5 to 6 locations specializing in electronic equipment. Initial reports suggested a mortar attack; however, evidence is increasingly pointing towards a suicide explosion.”
Security forces arrived quickly at the affected locations, initiating investigations and securing the perimeter. This latest incident has escalated tensions in Mogadishu, especially following the government’s recent efforts to enhance security measures in public spaces and key infrastructure sites.
Historically, mortar attacks have posed a significant threat in Somalia, with previous strikes targeting strategic locations such as the presidential palace, parliament building, and Aden Adde International Airport. This recent attack underscores the ongoing security challenges facing the Somali government, despite its commitment to safeguarding the nation’s markets and deploying additional troops for protection.
