(15-02-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — The Federal Government of Somalia and the United States have embarked on a strategic partnership through a significant military agreement to strengthen the Somali National Army (SNA), with a particular emphasis on the elite Danab brigade. This landmark pact, signed within the confines of Halane, adjacent to the American Embassy in Mogadishu, highlights a mutual commitment to enhancing security and stability in Somalia.
The agreement reached on Thursday, sets forth a plan to establish military centres in five pivotal Somali cities: Mogadishu, Kismayo, Baidoa, Jowhar, and Dhusamareb. These bases are designed to augment the operational effectiveness of both Somali and American forces, marking a crucial step forward in the collaborative effort to combat terrorism and ensure peace in the Horn of Africa.
The signing ceremony, witnessed by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, represents a significant milestone in military cooperation between the two countries. Defence Minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur and Shane Dixon, the US Embassy in Mogadishu’s Chargé d’Affaires, affixed their signatures to the memorandum of understanding (MoU), symbolizing a united front against extremism.
Currently, the United States Army operates from the Balli-Doogle Air Force Base and Kismayo Airport and has a small number of military personnel who are assisting and advising elite Somali forces Danab, conducting extensive operations as part of the global coalition against the Al-Shabaab militant group. This includes targeted airstrikes in the southern and central regions of Somalia, reflecting a steadfast commitment to eradicating terrorism.
