(17-03-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — A Kenyan doctor working in the Mudug region’s Galdogob district on Sunday made headlines by turning a once-barren plot of land into a thriving watermelon farm, amidst a backdrop of local tribal conflict.
The doctor, who is also a full-time medical professional at a local hospital, initiated the agricultural project on the outskirts of Galdogob after requesting land from the community. His efforts have culminated in a bountiful harvest, producing watermelons significantly larger than those typically found in other parts of Somalia.
The farm’s success has captured the attention of Somali social media users and has prompted discussions regarding the untapped agricultural potential of Mudug, a region more commonly associated with rocky terrain than with cultivation.
This agricultural venture stands in stark contrast to the ongoing disputes over grazing land that have plagued the local communities, resulting in numerous fatalities. While internal conflicts continue to hinder economic development and peace in the region, the Kenyan doctor’s endeavour presents a glimmer of hope and profitability.
The harvested watermelons have been sold and transported to various cities within the Galmudug and Puntland States, showcasing the substantial yield and the possibility of agricultural innovation even in less fertile areas.
