(24 March 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — Dahir Ali Abdi Amin, a former senior official in the Afgoye district’s local government, has been sentenced to 10 years in military prison after being found guilty of espionage and collaborating with the extremist group Al-Shabaab, officials said Saturday.
Amin, also known as Garboole, was arrested by the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) on 15 October 2023, following accusations of passing sensitive information to the militant group. He had previously held various positions within the Afgoye district administration since joining the municipality in 2005 and was a prominent figure in the local military since 2017.
The prosecution alleged that Garboole had been involved in a conspiracy to assassinate Hussein Jibril, the former deputy governor and now a leading figure among militants in the Lower Shabelle region, in August 2022. In addition to this, he was accused of leaking operational details regarding several high-ranking officials, including the former Afgoye police chief and the commander of the army, Gen. Elder Yusuf Rage.
After a lengthy investigation and trial process, the Military Prosecution Office successfully secured a conviction against Amin. Judge Major Mohamed Abdi Muumin of the Armed Forces Court announced the sentence, emphasising the severity of Amin’s crimes and their impact on regional security.
