(31 March 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud signed amendments to the first four chapters of the nation’s constitution on Sunday evening, officials reported. This important act follows the Federal Parliament’s majority vote in favour of the amendments on Saturday, marking a pivotal moment in Somalia’s legislative history.
The ceremony, attended by key figures including the members of the parliamentary committee led by MP Hussein Idow, signifies the culmination of efforts to solidify the constitutional foundation for a democratic Somalia. President Mohamud underscored the importance of these amendments for ensuring equality, strengthening government institutions, and laying the groundwork for democracy across the nation.
“The completion of the Constitution heralds a new era for all Somali citizens, offering a pathway to democracy and equal opportunities,” President Mohamud stated during the event.
However, the constitutional changes have ignited debate among Somalia’s political elites. Critics, including several former leaders, have expressed concerns that the amendments could centralise power within the presidential office. Specifically, they argue that the new provisions weaken the parliament’s role by granting the President authority to appoint and, if necessary, dismiss the Prime Minister.
