(05 April 2024) DHUSAMAREB (Halqabsi News) — In the Mudug region of Somalia, more than three thousand families have been displaced in recent days due to ongoing operations against the Al-Shabaab militia, officials reported. The resurgence of Al-Shabaab control in several areas has led to a mass exodus from cities including Badaweyne, Xinlabi, Aad, and Amara, following the withdrawal of troops.
Displaced residents have sought refuge in cities like Galkayo, Mirjicley, Wisil, and Bajeela, attempting to start anew amidst the turmoil. The displaced population, encompassing children, women, and the elderly, faces severe vulnerability.
The Galmudug state, alongside charity organisations, has been providing essential aid to those affected, focusing on the pastoral families hit hardest by the conflict. According to the Galmudug Committee for Refugees and Displaced Persons (GCRI), the past six months have seen a significant toll on the civilian population, with numerous women being widowed due to the liberation operations against Al-Shabaab.
The central regions of Somalia have witnessed extensive military efforts for over a year, aimed at dismantling Al-Shabaab’s presence. These operations, a collaboration between the government and local forces, continue to impact the local communities profoundly, with the humanitarian situation escalating as the conflict endures.
