(27-06-24) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – The Federal Cabinet of Ministers has approved a document outlining the national security threat assessment. The resolution, comprising eight articles, was developed by the Somalia National Security Office and reflects the government’s new vision for safeguarding the country’s existence, governance, and unity.
The eight identified threats include terrorism, secessionist movements, weak governance, border disputes, foreign intervention, climate change, technological risks, and social risks. While the specifics of each threat remain undisclosed, the Cabinet’s endorsement signals a proactive approach to addressing potential vulnerabilities.
The resolution comes amid ongoing concerns over Somalia’s sovereignty, particularly in light of a maritime agreement with Ethiopia that has been challenged for its potential impact on Somali territorial waters. Despite recent rumours of Ethiopia retracting from the agreement, the Ethiopian government has reaffirmed its commitment, further highlighting the need for robust national security measures.
In addition to the security resolution, the Cabinet meeting also reviewed the successful Independence Day celebrations and received updates on the latest operations against Al-Shabaab militants. The Ministries of Internal Security and Defence reported significant progress in their efforts to stabilize the country and eliminate the extremist group.
