(29-06-24) GALKAYO (Halqabsi News) – Heavy fighting broke out last night on the outskirts of Galkayo city, specifically in the villages of Towfiq and Afbarwaqo, according to various reports. While the exact number of casualties remains unclear, reports suggest both sides deployed a range of weapons in the conflict.
The situation remains tense, with residents reporting continued movement in the affected areas. In response, a joint delegation from the Galmudug and Puntland authorities, led by the Puntland finance minister and the Galmudug security minister, has arrived in the area to attempt to mediate the conflict.
The renewed clashes come amidst a period of heightened insecurity in the central regions, with various factional conflicts causing casualties. These clashes have coincided with Galmudug’s ongoing operations against al-Shabaab militants, from whom a significant area has recently been liberated.
