(25 July 2024) GAROWE (Halqabsi News) – The Puntland Security Force (PSF) has captured a foreign officer affiliated with Daesh, the Somali branch of ISIS, in the Almis mountains of the Bari region. The captured officer, identified as Imran Mohamed Alawi from Zanzibar, was presented in a video report published on the PSF Command’s Facebook page.
In the ongoing conflict between Daesh, the Puntland Security Forces, and Al-Shabaab, Alawi’s capture sheds light on the group’s composition and activities in the region. In a statement translated into Somali, Alawi confessed to being a member of Daesh and participating in battles against other groups. He revealed that the majority of Daesh fighters in the region are foreigners, including individuals from Ethiopia, Malawi, Yemen, and other countries.
Alawi further disclosed that he was apprehended after fleeing a recent attack targeting Daesh in the Qandala area on May 31st of this year.
The capture of a foreign Daesh officer highlights the ongoing security challenges posed by the group in Puntland and the broader region.
