(12 Aug 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – The United States has appointed Steven Gillen as the new Deputy Chief of Mission at its embassy in Mogadishu, Somalia, according to a statement from the US Embassy. Gillen, who assumed the role in August 2024, brings with him extensive experience in diplomacy and international affairs, having served as the Deputy Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs since 2021. His career also includes key roles within the State Department, with assignments in Iraq, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and the Near Eastern Affairs Bureau.
The embassy highlighted Gillen’s significant contributions to global human rights, refugee crises, and international security, underscoring the importance of his new role in strengthening U.S.-Somalia relations. His experience in conflict zones and his leadership in hostage affairs and human rights advocacy are seen as vital assets as he steps into this position during a critical time for the region. He will work alongside Ambassador Richard H. Riley, who arrived in Mogadishu in June to assume his ambassadorial role.
