(06 Sep 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi has voiced strong opposition to the recent agreement between the Federal Government of Somalia and Egypt, warning of the perceived dangers posed by Egypt’s involvement in the region.
Addressing a gathering in Togwajale district, President Bihi reiterated Somaliland’s commitment to its agreement with Ethiopia, stating that Somaliland’s future is not tied to Mogadishu.
“The community in Mogadishu that granted a military base to Egypt, we are not at war. If you claim we are uniting Somalis and Abyssinia invades us, we will defend ourselves,” he asserted, adding, “I will bring Egypt and forcefully take Somaliland, that is not possible.”
He went on to denounce Egypt’s presence in the Horn of Africa as a significant threat, criticizing the federal government for entering into agreements with distant countries while neglecting its neighbours.
“The Egyptian who attacks me does not seek an agreement with me. Ethiopia is not gifting us land, we are leasing it, we have exchanged benefits and we are neighbours,” the Somaliland President stated.
Responding to critics of Somaliland’s agreement with Ethiopia, President Bihi argued, “The same law that denies us statehood, allows Saudi Arabia to enter into agreements with China and the United States. Which book is this written in?”
He also addressed concerns from Somalis in Kenya opposing the Somaliland-Ethiopia pact, questioning their stake in the matter.
President Bihi concluded by stating that the agreement has exposed many adversaries who were aligned with Egypt, calling on his audience to support those they see as defending Somaliland’s cause.
