(09 Sep 2024) KISMAYO (Halqabsi News) – During a recent visit to Kismayo, Jubaland, UN Women Somalia’s representative, Sadiq Syed, met political figures and women’s rights advocates to enhance women’s participation in politics and peace efforts in Jubaland. Syed met with the Speaker of the Jubaland Parliament, Abdi Mohamed Abdirahman and women parliamentarians, to discuss strategies for increasing women’s political involvement in the upcoming elections.
Additionally, Syed met with Adar Ismail Abdullahi, Minister of Women and Family Affairs, to explore ways to promote women’s participation in peace and reconciliation processes and ensure quality services for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). Syed also held talks with the Kismayo Women Network Centre, to strengthen civil society’s role in advocating for peace and safeguarding women and girls from violence, with UN Women’s continued support highlighted as critical in these efforts.
