(10 Oct 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – Al-Shabaab militants today killed three businessmen in the Dayniile district of Banadir, in a brazen attack that directly challenges the Somali government’s efforts to enhance security. The victims were targeted while working in their shops, which had CCTV cameras installed as per a government directive. Despite previous threats from the group and protection efforts from authorities, the militants succeeded in carrying out the deadly assault, highlighting the persistent insecurity in the region.
This incident mirrors a similar attack in the Suuqa Holaha area, where businessman Abdinasir Dahir Diirshe was shot after being identified through CCTV footage. Al-Shabaab’s attacks on businesses compliant with government security measures signal the group’s determination to intimidate traders and disrupt security efforts. In several recent cases, militants have used explosive devices to target businesses equipped with surveillance, resulting in casualties.
The killings underscore the ongoing challenges faced by Somali security forces in countering Al-Shabaab’s insurgency. While the government has implemented measures to strengthen security, including the use of CCTV, the extremist group continues to pose a significant threat to businesses and civilians. The attacks serve as a grim reminder of the group’s ability to operate despite efforts to curb their influence in urban areas.
