(03 Oct 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – The Somali National Army (SNA) has ramped up its military campaign against the militant group Al-Shabaab, with significant operations conducted in key regions, according to the Ministry of Defence spokesman, First Lt. Sheikh Abukar Mohamed.
In a press conference in Mogadishu on Thursday, the spokesman detailed a series of coordinated offensives involving the SNA, the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), and local forces. One such operation took place in Burfule, a village under No50 in the Lower Shabelle region, where the October 14 Brigade inflicted heavy losses on Al-Shabaab forces.
The military’s efforts have been focused on eliminating Al-Shabaab’s presence in areas spanning from the Bay and Gedo regions to the Middle Shabelle and Galgaduud regions, where the group has been harassing residents and hiding in forested areas.
First Lt. Sheikh Abukar also highlighted a separate operation in Ali Heele, Galgaduud, where Brigade 77 neutralised 10 Al-Shabaab militants and destroyed a vehicle used by the group. In another strike, National Forces attacked militants in the Jowhar-Awdheegle corridor of Lower Shabelle, delivering a major defeat to the group.
The spokesman confirmed that several members of Al-Shabaab had surrendered to the National Army, citing internal suffering and the relentless military pressure as factors contributing to the defections.
