(14 Oct 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – In an address at the Seventy-first session of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Regional Committee in Doha, Somalia’s Health Minister, Dr Ali Haji Abubakar, reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to strengthening healthcare systems and addressing health disparities across the region. Dr Abubakar, who chaired last year’s committee session, emphasised that improving healthcare is both a professional duty and a personal mission for Somalia and other regional nations facing mounting challenges.
The Minister highlighted Somalia’s leadership role at the 77th World Health Assembly in May, where the country championed resolutions to reduce maternal and child mortality. He called on WHO and global partners to support this initiative, noting that six regional countries are off-track for achieving key health targets. He emphasised that achieving the Sustainable Development Goals related to maternal and child health requires committed partnerships and financial backing.
Concluding his address, Dr. Abubakar urged ministers and health officials to prioritise equitable healthcare access, resilient healthcare systems, and partnerships. “Our collective resilience and commitment can overcome these adversities,” he stated, encouraging unity and cooperation to build a healthier future across the region.
