(27 Feb 2025) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — Al-Shabab militants briefly seized parts of the town of Balcad in Somalia’s Middle Shabelle region on Tuesday following a pre-dawn attack.
The assault, which began around 05:00 local time (02:00 GMT), targeted military positions and reportedly led to the militants entering the town’s main police station and freeing prisoners.
Government reinforcements were deployed, and authorities later said they had regained full control of Balcad, inflicting heavy losses on the attackers.
“The Khawarij militants launched a pre-dawn assault on our forces, but they have been decisively repelled. Our troops have taught them an unforgettable lesson,” the government said in a statement.
Despite the government’s assertion of control, the situation in Balcad was tense, with ongoing security operations.
Al-Shabab has increased its attacks in Middle Shabelle in recent weeks. The group continues to pose a significant threat in Somalia, despite ongoing military offensives against it.
Authorities urged residents to remain vigilant.
