(19 Feb 2025) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — Somali government forces, alongside local militias, have launched a joint operation against Al-Shabab militants in the southern Mudug region, making significant gains.
Officials said the offensive targeted Al-Shabab strongholds in the Bacaadwayne village, where the group had reportedly been extorting civilians and planning attacks.
A government statement said the operation had struck key militant positions, destroying them and killing several fighters, including some senior operatives. “The operation targeted Al-Shabaab leaders and militants who had been hiding in the area for an extended period. Government forces successfully overran their positions,” the statement added.
Al-Shabab has not yet commented on the reported offensive.
Security sources say clashes continue in parts of southern Mudug, and military forces remain on high alert.
The central regions of Somalia, particularly Mudug and Galgaduud, are a key focus of the Somali government’s ongoing counter-terrorism campaign.
