The SSC-Khaatumo Administration has issued a firm rebuttal to Somaliland’s recent appeal for international recognition, calling it a “misguided attempt” to equate secessionist ambitions with Kosovo’s independence.
The press statement, released by SSC-Khaatumo’s Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, criticised Somaliland’s March 28 request to Kenya for formal recognition, asserting it undermines Somalia’s unity and sovereignty.
SSC-Khaatumo condemned what it described as “illegitimate and offensive” comparisons to Kosovo, accusing Somaliland of waging an eight-month-long military campaign on Las Anod that left hundreds dead, over 250,000 residents displaced, and essential civilian infrastructure destroyed. The administration labeled the assault a “clear violation of international humanitarian law” and a “crime against humanity.”
Calling the campaign a “desperate attempt” to impose Somaliland’s secessionist will, the statement reaffirmed the SSC-Khaatumo population’s allegiance to a united Somalia.
The administration urged Kenya to stay the course as a leading African voice for unity, warning that recognising Somaliland would embolden other destabilizing actors. It also emphasized the need for legal accountability for alleged war crimes committed by Somaliland forces, some of whom remain in SSC-Khaatumo custody.
The statement concluded with a call for African states and global actors to reject Somaliland’s bid and support justice, peace, and national unity in Somalia.
