The Puntland government has announced plans to deploy security forces to Garowe to conduct a city-wide disarmament operation aimed at curbing rising insecurity in the capital. The decision was made during a meeting of the Nugal Regional Security Committee, which convened in Garowe on Tuesday. Officials cited a recent deterioration in law and order, particularly following the killing of two men in the city centre earlier this week.
Nugaal Governor Col. Abdirahman Haji Abshir Farah told the media that the operation will target all individuals carrying weapons in the city, with a special focus on armed groups allegedly involved in the illicit trade of alcohol and cannabis.
“Security forces will be deployed throughout the city to enforce disarmament and ensure stability, with particular emphasis on groups that have recently resumed trafficking in alcohol and cannabis,” Governor Farah stated.
He further confirmed that the perpetrators behind the recent double homicide had been identified and apprehended. “Following investigations, the suspects have been formally identified and taken into custody. They will soon be brought before the law,” he added.
