(20 Feb 2025) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) — Somali security forces, supported by local fighters, have repelled an Al-Shabab attack on a village in the Middle Shabelle region, the government says.
The attack, which began with explosions early on Thursday, targeted Ceel Cali Axmed, a village in the Aadan Yabaal district.
The Somali National Army (SNA) and local Macawisley forces, met the attack with “heavy resistance,” according to reports. The government said the militants suffered significant losses.
The Ministry of Defence confirmed the successful defence in a statement. “The Somali National Army has achieved a significant victory against Al-Shabaab terrorists…The Khawarij suffered a heavy defeat, and our heroes are actively pursuing the remaining militants…Somalia will never waver in its fight against terrorism,” it said.
After the fighting, government forces and allied fighters continued operations, advancing 30 kilometres beyond Ceel Cali Axmed. The situation in the town is now described as stable, with security forces in control.
The clash is part of the Somali government’s ongoing efforts to eliminate Al-Shabab from rural areas.
