The Federal Republic of Somalia has welcomed the announcement by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) to disband, lay down arms, and cease its armed operations. In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, Somalia described the PKK’s decision as a “pivotal and courageous move” that would significantly contribute to enhancing peace, fostering national stability, and advancing development in Turkey and the broader region.
The Somali government expressed its unwavering support for initiatives that prioritise peaceful engagement and national unity in Turkey, emphasising the importance of regional stability and shared prosperity.
The PKK has been engaged in an armed insurgency against the Turkish state since 1984, resulting in tens of thousands of casualties. The group’s dissolution is seen as a critical step toward ending decades of conflict and advancing reconciliation efforts within Turkey and beyond.
