(05 June 2025) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – A military court in Mogadishu on Thursday handed a life sentence to Muhidin Abdisalam Mohamud, (Daqare), for recruiting individuals for Al-Shabaab, a campaign that included the radicalisation of children and former soldiers, dating back to 2009.
The court was told that Daqare had been appointed by a senior militant, Hussein Fiidoow, to spearhead indoctrination efforts within his sub-clan. He was found responsible for enlisting figures such as ex-Lieutenant Shariif Mohamed Barqadle (‘Jeego’) and former SNA private Mohamed Abdulle Nur (‘Biyamaaloow’). Both men subsequently participated in major terrorist attacks, including the 2019 bombings at Mogadishu Mall and Baar Cagaweyne, and the 2022 gun attack on Aden Adde Airport.
Military prosecutors further connected Daqare to the radicalisation of Shariif Nuur Ali Awliyo, a former Deputy Commissioner for Social Affairs in Hodan District, and another operative, Mohamed Ali Kaahiye, who reportedly remains active with Al-Shabaab in the Mudug region.
It was also revealed that another individual influenced by Daqare was his maternal cousin, Abdihakin Ahmed Diini Awaale (‘Wadne’), a former deputy SNA officer. Wadne exploited his security credentials to facilitate the smuggling of vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBIEDs) into Mogadishu, bypassing security checkpoints.
Daqare was arrested by security forces following months of surveillance. After a thorough investigation, the Office of the Military Prosecutor formally presented the case on 19 May 2025.
The First-Level Military Court delivered its verdicts earlier today:
- Muhidin Abdisalam Mohamud, ‘Daqare’: Sentenced to life imprisonment.
- Abdihakin Ahmed Diini Awaale, ‘Wadne’: Sentenced to four years’ imprisonment for terrorism-related offences.
Brigadier General Hassan Ali Nur Shuute, head of the Military Court, confirmed the sentences and stressed the judiciary’s determination to dismantle recruitment networks that support terrorist activities.
