(11-03-23) Hargeisa – In Somaliland, 40 people are being held for homosexuality, with 36 awaiting trial, according to a report by a committee responsible for these issues led by MP Mohamed Sheikh Abdirahman.
This news comes after four men were convicted of homosexual acts and sentenced to eight years in prison, with the incident being reported in the media months ago.
The committee gave a report at the Somaliland House of Representatives, stating that more and more people are being arrested for practising homosexuality.
In 2022, 28 people were arrested for homosexuality, and the number has increased this year, according to the committee.
Homosexuality is illegal in Somaliland, and those convicted can face imprisonment for up to three years. The four men who were recently sentenced to eight years in prison for homosexual acts were also charged with conspiracy to commit a felony.
