(25/07/23) GAROWE – The Puntland regional assembly convened for a critical session earlier today, where members overwhelmingly voted in favour of the proposed constitutional amendments. Out of the 60 members present, 54 supported the amendment, while six opposed it. The modifications are aimed at broadening the political spectrum, primarily by increasing the number of political parties participating in the elections. The move was strongly opposed by the opposition leaders.
The development comes amidst ongoing mediation efforts between the government and opposition leaders over the electoral model the region should adopt. The mediation is spearheaded by esteemed elder Islan Issa Islan Mohamed, who has urged the opposition to abstain from violence and await the outcomes of the mediation process.
The current security situation in Garowe, the capital of Puntland, remains stable, with no apparent signs of tension following the parliamentary vote.
