UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Somalia, Ms Catriona Laing, met with the Federal Government of Somalia’s (FGS) Special Envoy for Somaliland, Abdikarin Hussein Guled, in Mogadishu.
In a joint effort to foster unity and peace, the meeting focused on carving a way forward for the strained Somalia-Somaliland talks. During the discussions, Laing reaffirmed the United Nations’ readiness to support the resumption of dialogue between Somalia and Somaliland.
Following the meeting, Special Representative Laing tweeted about the encounter, emphasising the UN’s commitment to support in the restoration of peace talks.
In response, Special Envoy Guled expressed gratitude for the meeting, highlighting the productive discussions about the FGS and Somaliland dialogue. He also mentioned that the Special Representative’s recent visit to Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland, was a topic of their conversation.
Guled’s tweet also revealed that the UN Special Representative applauded the efforts of the Federal Government of Somalia and the wider consultations with the federal member states of the country. This indicates a positive endorsement from the UN towards Somalia’s efforts in restoring peaceful communications and diplomatic relations with the Somaliland administration.
