(10/08/23) MOGADISHU – Ambassador Mohamed El-Amine Souef, at the helm of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), conducted a visit on Tuesday to the Movement Control (MOVCON) and Aviation Security (AVSEC) sections. The purpose was to acquaint himself with the operational integration of these units and their vital roles in supporting peace operations in Somalia
Joined by Assistant Secretary-General Dr. Aisa Kirabo Kacyira, who oversees the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS), Ambassador Souef’s tour showcased the seamless collaboration between ATMIS, UNSOS, and Somali Security Forces (SSF). The visit assumed particular significance as it emphasised ongoing capacity building and mentorship initiatives for the SSF in anticipation of ATMIS troop withdrawal from Somalia.
“I advise national staff, particularly our sisters, to seize this opportunity and enhance their skills. Tomorrow, you could apply for international roles and share your experience from working in Somalia,” emphasised Ambassador Souef, recognising the pivotal role of professional growth, especially for Somali nationals, including women.
Dr. Kacyira applauded the cooperative spirit evident during the tour. “What truly inspires me is witnessing ATMIS, SSF, UNSOS, as well as civilians, including young individuals, collaborating harmoniously towards a shared objective. During this drawdown phase, how can we amplify the capabilities of SSF, the government, and the Somali population? This, in my view, represents one of the most exemplary approaches,” she commented.
The MOVCON and AVSEC sections are manned by transport and aviation specialists who facilitate the movement of passengers and cargo as well as the maintenance, safety and security of aircraft within the mission area.
