(24-08-23) MOGADISHU – Heavy operations were carried out overnight in several districts of the Banadir region on Wednesday, specifically in Heliwaa, Yaqshid and Warta Nabadda, according to government sources. These operations were a joint effort between the police forces and the Military Police’s security forces.
Reliable sources have reported that the army, in a broad show of force, meticulously spread out across neighbourhoods of the aforementioned districts, conducting searches that spanned several hours.
The operations resulted in the arrest of numerous young individuals. While a portion of those detained have been released, others remain in custody, undergoing questioning by security agencies.
As of now, the security agencies have not released detailed information concerning last night’s operations in the three districts. However, officials have stated that the operations’ primary objective is to bolster security within the region. Further, they asserted that similar operations would ensue across other districts in the capital.
These security measures follow a series of concerning events. Only last night, Al-Shabaab militants initiated direct attacks, marked by explosions, in the Kakhda district. These attacks resulted in significant losses. Furthermore, the day prior saw another devastating attack near the Ifka Hale intersection in Mogadishu, where an explosives-laden vehicle was deployed.
Such disconcerting events unfold amidst ongoing conflict between the Somali government and Al-Shabaab, with both factions deeply entrenched in frontline warfare.
